Celebrate World Health Day the Rec & Ed Way

Today, April 7, is World Health Day! With the number of people living with diabetes having quadrupled since 1980 to 422 million adults, this year’s campaign focuses on beating diabetes. How much do you know about diabetes? Click for a quiz to test your knowledge!

Rec & Ed can help YOU stay healthy and prevent diabetes. We offer cooking classes and a variety of fitness options to keep you at your best. Consider these choices:

Sally Searls retires after 32 years with Rec & Ed

This week, Rec & Ed staff will bid a fond, grateful farewell to Sally Searls, Lifelong Learning Manager.

Over thirty-two years, Sally has provided enrichment programming for tens of thousands of children and adults. She's also seen a lot of things change in the school district and at Rec & Ed.  When she started, Rec & Ed was still receiving a subsidy from the school district and the city. During her tenure, the recreation and community education departments were joined under one Rec & Ed umbrella.  Sally was critical in transitioning community education to a self-sustaining budget.

Sally personifies the term “Lifelong Learning.” Her curiosity and passion led her to push Rec & Ed forward with branding, marketing, customer service and analytics. 

"Sally has given so much to the school district and Ann Arbor community," said Jenna Bacolor, Executive Director of Community Education and Recreation. "She helped establish and grow our child care, after school and summer camp programs. Simply put, she's made life better in our community."

Everyone at Rec & Ed wishes Sally the best in her well-deserved retirement. Her last day with Rec & Ed is January 22.

At its most basic, mindfulness is simply being aware of the present moment. As a technique used in meditation, yoga, and other insightful activities, mindfulness has been shown to help boost one's immune system, reduce stress, focus attention and fight depression.

1. Creating from Within class
Are you looking for a way to connect with your creative self? This class provides a safe space to find joy in self-exploration and expression.
